You can make a DIY cord organizer for cheap using this tutorial! This cable organizer can be made in minutes – we even provide a template.

Skills Required: None. You don’t need any prior crafting knowledge to make a cable tidy using this method. You’ll simply be hot gluing felt and attaching Velcro. Even a child can do it (supervised, of course!).

DIY cord organizers

I got my first cell phone when I was 25 years old. Of course it had a charging cord, and along with the phone quickly became something to manage. Now I had a phone AND a charger to keep track of – and did I mention, if I lost one, the other became worthless?

You should never put small phones and cords in the hands of disorganized people such as myself.

Fast forward several years (okay almost 19 years), and here I am with more devices and more cords than I know what to do with! Do you know how many cords I’ve purchased over the course of time that I thought I lost, only to find them again?

It’s a lot.

So consequently, I’ve had to make a DIY cord organizer more than once. More than ten times, really. And now I’m going to show you how to make a cable organizer on the cheap!

The secret is that my design is extremely easy and extremely inexpensive to make. This is a great craft idea for adults, but also perfect for kids for back to school crafts. Kids these days have cords to manage too!

One of the complaints I had about other cord organizers is that they still didn’t keep the cable tidy – I could stuff them in a pouch, but then they’d be twisted when they came out.

With this cable organizer, you have to tidy the cord first before wrapping it around. It works really well for staying organized.

Plus the price is right Felt is less than $1 per piece at the craft store, and if you enjoy creating you probably have the other supplies on hand. Well, you’ll probably have to buy Velcro.

Velcro to Use

The only question you might have about this cable tidy project is what kind of Velcro to use. If you’ve never bought Velcro before, there are a few things to know:

  • You can get it in any color you like to coordinate with your felt (we used white)
  • I prefer the 3/4″ width but you can also use either 7/8″ or 1″
  • It can be purchased in a long strip or in squares – don’t get the round pieces
  • You can get either self-adhesive or no adhesive – you’re going to use hot glue to attach it

Keep in mind that there are two parts to Velcro, the male and the female. The male side has the hooks, the female side has the loops. That’s important as you follow the tutorial below, so that when you wrap the cable tidy, it’s secure.

DIY cord organizers

If you’re ready to start the project, this is what you’re going to need.

Gather These Supplies

The tutorial for the project is at the bottom of this post, but before you scroll down to that, I want to mention a few things you might need or want to know:

  • If you don’t have a hot glue gun, you can use craft glue or felt glue. I keep felt glue on hand just because it works better than regular glue. It doesn’t soak in as quickly into the felt and doesn’t make blotches. You can try it with craft glue, it just takes longer to dry. Place a book on top or something heavy while setting.
  • Felt is available at the craft store, but many times it’s just the cheapy stuff in the kids’ section. You can check out the fabric section if your craft store has it. You can also look for wool felt on Etsy. Benzie Design has some cute stuff too.
  • You could probably substitute with another fabric besides felt, but it has to be thick enough to be stable when you wrap it (and hold the cords). For example, regular cotton fabric is a no-go on its own. If you try something else, let me know how it works!

Ready to wrap your cord? Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Wrap your cord and place it down
  2. Fold the short end down and attach the Velcro
  3. Roll the cord over once
  4. Pull the tab up and attach the Velcro again
Wrapping a cord in a handmade organizer

Your cord is very secure and the organizer won’t slip off, even in your bag! I had so much I made three of these DIY cord organizers in just a matter of minutes. Here’s the how to card for this project:

  • Using the template, cut out the large piece from one color of felt, and the smaller piece from a contrasting color.
Two paper templates on top of two pieces of felt
  • You’ll have two pieces of felt that you’ll layer on top of each other. Trim off any edges that might not be straight.
Two pieces of felt cut out using the template
  • Add hot glue to the bottom of the smaller piece of felt, all the way around the perimeter. Use a thin bead.
Hot glue the felt pieces together
  • Smooth down the top piece of felt onto the larger bottom piece.
Two pieces of felt glued together one on top of the other
  • Hot glue Velcro on the back of the larger felt piece as follows: one 3/4” male piece with the center at 3/4” from the small end, one 1 1/2” female piece with the center at 3 1/2” from the large end, and one 1” male piece with the center at 1” from the large end.
    Glue down the Velcro
  • Hot glue Velcro on the back of the smaller felt piece as follows: one 1” female piece with the center at 3 1/2” from the small end.
Two pieces of felt hot glued together with a piece of velcro on top
  • Let cool and then wrap your cord as described in the Notes.

Notes

How to wrap your cord:
  1. Wrap your cord and place it down on the felt
  2. Fold the short end down and attach the Velcro
  3. Roll the cord over once
  4. Pull the tab up and attach the Velcro again

After I finished the project, I realized that I could’ve added some sort of embellishment to the large tab. Something like embroidery, a button, etc. I kind of like them plain, but I just wanted to bring that up in case you want to give it a go. Let me know what you think in the comments!

Here are 25 great ways to organize craft supplies. These come in handy for cleaning up your craft room or studio. Lots of budget friendly options!

25 Clever Ways to Organize Craft Supplies

In the whimsical world of crafting, where glitter reigns supreme and beads scatter like stars in the night sky, my crafting corner is currently resembling a scene less magical and more . . . chaotic.

Nestled in my cozy loft, where space is as precious as a rare spool of vintage ribbon, I’ve carved out a nook that serves as my creative oasis. Yet, despite the lack of an official “craft room,” I’ve come to realize that the bond we crafters share transcends the physical dimensions of our creative spaces.

It’s a shared understanding that, regardless of whether we have a sprawling studio or a compact corner, our crafting havens are sacred. But let’s face it, even the most enchanting creative spaces can fall victim to the clutter of our beloved craft supplies.

As crafters, we accumulate an impressive array of supplies – from the tiniest seed beads to rolls of vibrant yarns, each item a testament to our creative aspirations. However, with great creativity comes great…clutter.

Suddenly, our spaces feel less like sanctuaries of imagination and more like a battleground of glitter and glue. But it’s National Organization Month, and I am on a mission to transform my craft nook from a chaotic clutterfest into a haven of harmony and inspiration.

Join me in this quest for organizational bliss, where we’ll explore 25 ingenious ways to tame the chaos of our craft supplies. From innovative storage solutions to clever organizing hacks, prepare to be inspired to create a space that not only sparks joy but also ignites your creative fire.

As you journey through these 25 ideas, I invite you to share your own tales of organizational triumphs and challenges. Which method resonates with you? Which idea sparks a lightbulb moment? Leave me a comment.

Let’s embark on this creative adventure together, and transform our craft spaces into masterpieces of organization and inspiration!

Do you want to get organized on a budget? Me too! You’re going to love these cheap organization hacks and organizing tips. Make a difference in all areas of your home, don’t spend a lot while you do it!

50 Tips for Getting Organized on a Budget

Despite the fact that we moved into a new house only eight months ago, I’m still trying to get it together. I get to this point  in every move I’ve done where I’ve past the purging stage.

When I reach my final destination I have to go through my things again . . . and then getting organized becomes a constant process that never seems to end.

The nice thing about moving into a new home is that I can start from scratch. The catch is that I can’t spend a ton of money – I just bought a house!

How to Get Organized

I don’t want to break the bank getting everything organized, so I’ve been gathering relatively inexpensive tips that I know are going to come in handy.

I want to share what I’ve found, and maybe these will help you too. If you need the ultimate guide to get organized on a budget, this is it! These 50 tips (from professional organizers, I might add) will come in handy for many rooms in your home.

Check out this list and I can’t wait to hear which of these suggestions are your favorites!

Cleaning products on shelf

General Organizing Tips

  1. Recycle old pickle jars by spray painting the lids and adding handles to the top. Great for storage, and pretty too!
  2. Add a clear shoe organizer over the back of any door to hold small items – toys, craft supplies, and more.
  3. Purchase huge Ziploc storage bags for winter and summer clothing – switch out your wardrobe as needed, keeping your closet more organized and accessible during each season.
  4. Store jewelry in a clear pill container. This solution is perfect for travel. You can also turn it into a DIY spice container for camping!
  5. Add a pegboard and peg hooks to any wall, turning it into instant storage space. Spray paint the pegboard any color you like.
Washi tape cord labels
  1. Don’t keep your magazines that you saved for the one idea on page 32 – instead, rip out individual pages (or color copy) and keep them in a file folder for future reference.
  2. Plastic bag holders you can mount to the wall are perfect for storing wrapping paper.
  3. Label your phone (and appliance) cords with washi tape – give each person in your home a different color so you know whose is whose. You can also sort type by color as well! Don’t forget to make yourself some cord organizers.
  4. Get organized by adding collapsible bins to your car trunk for storage right when you need it! Fold the down when you aren’t using them to keep them out of the way.
  5. Store your greeting cards in a tabbed, expanding file folder sorted by month and/or occasion.
  6. Keep paint chips, recipes torn from magazines, local menus, and other household essentials in an accordion file in the kitchen for easy access.
  7. In your laundry room, hang a wire between two nails. Add clothespins and use to hang wet clothing including socks, gloves, hats, and raincoats.
Open fridge stocked with food

Kitchen Organization

  1. Use recycled baby food jars to hold spices. You can store them in a drawer upside down or stack and get organized in a cabinet.
  2. Purchase a three ring binder for instruction manuals and keep in the kitchen (works for menus as well).
  3. A shower tension bar works well as an under-the-sink organizer. You can hang bottles by their handles.
  4. One of my favorite storage tips for a deep pantry is to use a lazy susan. You can spin it to see what you have and keep items from getting stuck in the back.
  5. Use a large amount of small, clear containers for quick and easy cleanup of your pantry (just add printable labels).
Collection of cookie cutters in two baskets
  1. Instead of printable labels, you can also use chalkboard labels to make sure you know what is in each container – erase when you change what’s inside!
  2. Decorate a 12″ by 48″ board with clothespins (use hot glue to attach them) so you can hang chips and other snacks off of it. Makes the goodies easy to see and grab.
  3. Cookie cutter tubs can take up a lot of cabinet space – use paper towel holders that attach to the wall to store them instead (slide them onto the stem)!
  4. Add cup hooks underneath your cabinets for mugs – taking advantage of the extra space inside.
  5. Bamboo skewers packed into a container are perfect for holding knives and other random utensils.
  6. Use a plastic tray to get organized on top of cups or mugs – you’ll give yourself another layer of storage.
Colorful-measuring-cups-hanging-in-a-line
  1. If you save old plastic shopping bags like I do, an old Kleenex box is a perfect place to store them until you need them.
  2. Use Command hooks on the back of your pantry doors to hold measuring spoons and cups.
  3. A soda can dispenser can be an invaluable tool for getting more space in the fridge.
  4. Buy several small trash cans and make a recycling center in your kitchen, as opposed to buying one made for recycles. Those are typically way more expensive.
  5. Use magazine holders to get organized in your pantry. Add printed recipes and cookbooks to the holders.
Piles-of-colorful-towels-stacked

Bathroom Organization

  1. Recycle small glass jars to hold cotton swabs, cotton balls, and other essentials inside your bathroom vanity drawers.
  2. Give each member of the family a plastic shower caddy for their essential items (and for easy storage and access under the sink or in cabinets).
  3. Use a rolling cart for beauty products that you’ll use on a regular basis – separate items by shelf.
  4. Mount mason jars in the bathroom under a cabinet or on a board with clamps for easy access to small items like q-tips and cotton balls.
Woman-sorting-clothing-into-a-storage-bin

Closet & Office Organization

  1. Use ice cube trays to hold office supplies in your drawers.
  2. Recycle chip canisters into a desk organizer that can hold brushes, pencils and more.
  3. Use shower caddies in a closet for storage. Simply hang with a picture hanger and nail.
  4. Small plastic containers or caddies are perfect for grouping cleaning products upright in cabinets and keeping them from tipping.
  5. Keep sheet sets neat and together by folding and storing the fitted sheet, flat sheet and pillowcase inside the second pillowcase.
  6. Instead of purchasing clear shoeboxes, you can keep the cardboard box your shoes came in and cut out a panel at one end so you can see (also provides ventilation).
Craft-supplies-including-stickers-and-decorative-scissors-laying-on-a-work-surface

Craft Room Organization

  1. Standing sectioned mesh hampers are perfect for yarn and deco mesh storage.
  2. Use recycled tin cans or Crystal light containers for craft paint and/or markers.
  3. Use clear plastic scrapbook paper holders to make your scrapbook papers visible and easy to access. You can also use binder clips in the closet – just clip to hangers.
  4. Glue wooden candlesticks to the bottom of pie tins (with E-6000) to make the perfect tiered storage for any loose craft supplies. You can get creative and decorate the candlesticks, too.
  5. Put your glitter in salt shakers – it’s the perfect way to store the glitter and use it without dumping out the whole container.
  6. An old toothbrush holder becomes a great way to hold scissors and tools.
Living room with a gray couch and turquoise pillows

Living Area and Bedroom Organization

  1. Store blankets and other small items in your living room in inexpensive (but attractive) ottomans.
  2. A pop up laundry bin makes for amazing stand-up toy storage.
  3. Turn an old picture frame into a jewelry organizer by removing the back and stringing thin wire across, gluing on each side.
  4. Create a scarf hanger by adding clear plastic shower rings to a hanger. This is one of those ideas you can use for ties and belts as well.
  5. Paint a wall in your home with chalkboard paint and use it as a scheduling station.
  6. Revamp your mudroom or laundry room by giving each person their own basket, so everyone knows where to drop off/find their personal on-the-go essentials like keys, bags, homework, etc. It’s a time saver too!

These are my absolute favorite organization tips, and I know there are a lot of them, but I also know there are many more. I’d love to know your favorite tips to get organized in the comments below!

Whether you have one ring or 30 rings, you’ll find a way to organize, store or display them here on this list of DIY ring holders!

diy ring holders

Okay, I can admit it — I have a problem. If I’m honest, I have two problems. First, I am guilty of taking my rings off to make dinner and placing them on the counter. Eek! I know. They could easily fall on the floor or (even worse) in the sink. That is why I am looking to make a ring holder.

My second problem? I love rings. Doesn’t sound like a problem, but when you’ve collected so many rings that you happen upon one and don’t remember buying it, it is a problem!

This is why in addition to a ring holder for the kitchen, I also want to make something to store my rings separate from my other jewelry. Maybe even a way that displays them nicely. This way I can admire my collection!

Anyone else have one of these problems? Well, I can help you out. I looked all over to find the best DIY ring holders, dishes, and displays. I’ve collected them to make the list below and now I just need to decide which ones to make. Take a look and let me know your favorites in the comments.
