Turn a quote into a unique piece of art with this simple cross stitch on canvas tutorial! This project is fully customizable and so much fun to make – perfect for gifts or home decor. I’ve included my free pattern in the post.

Skills Required: Beginner. You need to know how to paint canvas and the basics of cross stitch to complete this project.

Cross stitch on canvas

I’m so excited to share this project with you! It’s one of my favorite projects EVER. Do you have any favorite quotes or song lyrics that you love? You know, they make you happy when you read them on a page or hear them sung on the radio.

The Beatles songs are like that for me – my mom loved listening to them when I was young, and we used to sing the lyrics in the car on rides home from school.

To remind me of those fun times when I was little, I cross stitched on canvas with The Beatles lyrics “all you need is love.” If you have a phrase that bring a smile to your face, this project is fun (and easy!).

Embroidery floss on canvas

This canvas makes a sweet gift if you personalize it for the recipient. If you do what I did, this canvas makes a great Valentine’s Day decoration, too. Here’s what you’re going to need.

Gather These Supplies

  • Printer and plain white paper
  • 12” x 24” canvas
  • FolkArt acrylic paint – Aqua (or color of your choice)
  • Printed pattern of a quote or lyrics (here’s mine)
  • Embroidery thread – for my pattern, one skein covered about three letters – I used four skeins of white and one skein each of a few shades of pink
  • Embroidery needles
  • Tool to puncture your canvas – I used a bead reamer like any of these
  • Scissors
  • Painter’s tape

REMEMBER TO REVERSE THE PATTERN if you use letters. You are taping the pattern to the back of the canvas, and you want it to show up correctly on the front.

ALSO IMPORTANT: every stretch canvas like I used has a wood frame. That means that you can’t make your pattern the full size of the canvas because you can’t stitch edge to edge.

You’ll need to consider the measurements inside of the wood frame as the size of your stitching area. If your canvas has a wood crossbar, that’s fine. Those are easy to stitch behind and around.

Course Wall Art
Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 6 hours
Dry Time 2 hours
Total Time 8 hours 15 minutes
Servings 1 canvas
Cost $12

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1 12” x 24” canvas
  • 2-3 bottles FolkArt acrylic paint Aqua or color of your choice
  • Printed pattern of a quote or lyrics here’s mine
  • 6 skeins Embroidery floss for my pattern one skein covered about three letters – I used four skeins of white and one skein each of a few shades of pink
  • 1 roll Painter’s tape

Instructions

  • Paint the canvas with acrylic paint. Give it three layers (completely cover it) and let dry.
Painting the canvas with turquoise paint
  • Print your cross-stitch pattern and tape the pages together . . . then tape the pattern inside the back of the canvas (in the center). Make sure that it fits within the wood frame, or you’ll need to print again until it fits.
Taping the pattern into the back of the canvas
  • Use the bead reamer to puncture through the paper pattern and canvas from back to front, at each corner of every "X" on the pattern. If your bead reamer has a sharp tip, it’s very easy to punch through.
Punching holes in the canvas with an awl
  • Thread your embroidery floss through the needle and tie a knot (several times) at one end. Begin cross stitching your canvas, following your pattern exactly.
Cross stitching on canvas with a needle and thread
  • This is how the back will look. When you finish a strand, tie off the floss by threading under several stitches. Then begin a new strand.
Securing the thread on the back of the canvas
  • When you get to the last word(or whatever word you would like to highlight), change the floss to another color. Finish in the same way.

Notes

Step 2: Here’s how I created my pattern. I searched for “cross-stitch letter patterns” online, and then used Excel to place x’s in the boxes to duplicate the letters. I then reversed the pattern (since I was taping to the back) and printed to fit. You might have to print a few times to make sure that your pattern fits your canvas – see my attached pattern document for a sample.
Step 3: Just be careful as you are punching– don’t rest the canvas on your leg!
Step 4: I did not remove individual threads from the floss strands – I just used the strand as a whole.

This is one of my favorite home decor projects of all time – it makes me happy every time I see it on the wall. Now you have to make one for yourself, right?

This is the easiest glue art project you’ll ever make – all you need is a canvas and your favorite paint color. Customize this glue on canvas art with any saying you like!

Skills Required: None. Even if you’ve never crafted before, you’ll be able to make this canvas. You’ll just be drawing with glue and painting. Great for older kids and teenagers too.

Make Glue Art on Canvas in Four Easy Steps

I am sure a lot of you have probably seen this glue craft all over Pinterest. I saw it, was intrigued, and decided to give it a try. And now I am sharing it with you because I LOVED IT.

It was really fun to make, totally customizable, and really pretty in the end! Next time you need to add some decor to your home, make this DIY canvas wall art! Read how I did it below . . .

Note: I used washable glue for this home decor, but you can do the exact same thing with a hot glue gun and glue sticks. Or a thicker craft glue. You basically need a medium that is going to dry or cool with a raised texture.

(get all of our wall art projects here!)

Gather These Supplies

  • Canvas
  • Craft glue (with a tip) OR a hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Spray paint or craft paint in the color of your choice
  • Pencil
  • Saying – you’ll either hand draw or print
  • Transfer paper (optional)
  • Paintbrush (optional)

If you aren’t feeling very creative or you want to make a specific design on your canvas, you don’t necessarily have to draw it.

You can print something from the internet and place the paper down on the canvas with a piece of carbon transfer paper in between. Trace with your pencil and the design will end up on the canvas!

Glue on canvas for your wall

This art is subtle but keep in mind – you can use any colors of spray paint you like! You can combine colors if you like as well.

Hang up your glue on canvas art and admire your work! Get the printable how to card for this project below.

Notes

  • The only thing I had to purchase for this project was a canvas – I had the glue and paint on hand.
  • Glue from a bottle with a writer tip was used for this project, but you can also use hot glue or dimensional fabric paint. The hot glue is great except for the stringing. If you use hot glue, blast the canvas with a hair dryer after you’re done to melt all the stringies.

This DIY wall hanging with canvas is a cute no sew project – and you can personalize it with any quote you like. So easy, anyone can do it!

Skills Required: Beginner. You don’t need crafting skills to make this project, but you do need to know how to use an iron and a hot glue gun. They will be your best friends in this project!

Mini DIY Wall Hanging in Five Steps (No Sew!)

Hey guys – It’s Aki again from Minted Strawberry dropping by with another easy tutorial. Ready for school? I don’t go to school anymore, but I still have siblings who do. I love sending them personalized stuff that they can use for the school year.

This mini DIY wall hanging is so easy to make and takes just minutes to assemble. It’s a perfect decoration piece for your kid’s (or your) dorm room, office space, or even locker area! Customize it with different colors and finishes as well as different quotes.

You don’t even have to have a cutting machine to embellish it! Ready to know how easy this was to make? Check out the tutorial below!

Gather These Supplies

For my canvas: I used leftover dropcloth fabric from an earlier project, misted it with water, and ironed it to remove the creases. Mine ended up being 7″ x 9″.

If you've always wanted to make a wall hanging with the quote or saying of your choice, this is how it's done! No sewing skills required.

Total Time 30 minutes
Servings 1 hanging
Cost $8

Equipment

Ingredients

  • Canvas fabric
  • Dowel rod(s)
  • Twine
  • Iron-on Design or Printable Iron-on Transfer Paper optional

Instructions

  • Cut off a piece of canvas fabric to the size you want your wall hanging to be – I used leftover canvas dropcloth fabric from an earlier project, misted it with water, and ironed it to remove the creases. Mine ended up being 7″ x 9″.
iron on canvas on an ironing board
  • Fold the sides and the top part of the piece, iron to make the crease permanent and then hot glue them in place.
  • Do the same for the bottom, except fold it in a pennant shape – I recommend folding the hanging in half horizontally just so you know where the middle is and use the middle mark as a guide to folding your pennant bottom. Hot glue that in place as well.
hot glue gun with a piece of canvas
  • Now take your dowel and fold your fabric over the dowel and hot glue the edges of the fabric in place, making sure your dowel is still removable.
hot glue pocket for rod wall hanging
  • Choose your design for the wall hanging. I hand-lettered 'You Got This' in my design program. Cut out the vinyl on a cutting machine.
You got this vinyl sitting on top of the canvas
  • Iron down your design with your iron, but make sure to use the appropriate heat settings according to the material you are using.
    iron on the design
  • Cut off the excess dowel piece and tie jute twine on either end and secure with some hot glue, and you are done!
Cutting twine and adding to the dowel rod to hang
  • Spruce it up further by adding some color by way of paint or even some floral embellishments.

Notes

There are a variety of iron-on transfers that you can purchase if you don’t have an electronic die-cutting machine, or you can also print a saying on a piece of Printable Iron-on Heat Transfer (for light fabrics).

If you love budget friendly decor, this is your project. Learn how to make this unique yarn wall hanging with a stick and some cute colors of yarn.

Skills Required: None. Even if you’ve never crafted before, you can make this wall hanging. You’ll be tying yarn and spray painting, and all that’s required is patience.

DIY yarn wall art

Our new place has a lot of bare walls begging for some attention. I like to mix things up and avoid putting something framed on each and every wall, so I came up with this DIY wall hanging idea for a change of pace.

I’m excited to share this yarn wall hanging with you because it’s SO easy. You’ll only need to cut a dowel rod down to size, cut yarn, and then drill holes in the ends to attach your hanger. Although I have an option for that if you don’t have a drill!

I love that this wall hanging goes with a variety of styles including boho, farmhouse, modern . . . it’s really about the choice of colors and how you put them together.

You can use items already in your home to help you pick yarn colors, but I also love using Design Seeds for color palettes.

Three skeins of yarn with a dowel rod wood board and scissors

Once you pick your colors, the rest of this wall hanging is simple. Ready to get started on this yarn craft? Here’s how it’s done.

Gather These Supplies

  • Dowel rod – 1 inch in diameter, cut down to 21″
  • Piece of wood or cardboard for wrapping yarn – mine was about 21″
  • Skeins of yarn – 3 in complementary colors
  • Scissors
  • Drill (optional)
  • Saw – to cut down your dowel rod

For wrapping the yarn: I used a board that was about 21″ inches in length that I had leftover from another project for wrapping. Stiff cardboard would also work.

The finished hanging really looks awesome on the wall. I can’t believe this didn’t take that long to make, and how good it looks! It would be fun to experiment with different colors and styles of yarn.

Ingredients

  • 1 Dowel rod(s) or stick
  • 1 piece wood or cardboard, to use for wrapping
  • 3 skeins Yarn complementary colors
  • Sandpaper

Instructions

  • Select a dowel rod and cut down to size using a saw. Sand the ends to clean up.
  • Begin with the center color. Wrap the yarn around your wood or cardboard about 15 – 16 times. Trim the end.
    Wrapping-yarn-around-a-board-and-trimming-with-scissors
  • Once you are done wrapping and have trimmed the end from the skein, cut across the yarn. You'll basically have 15 – 16 pieces of yarn together that will be tied to your dowel.
    Trimming-the-yarn-on-the-board-with-scissors
  • Double the yarn (fold it in half) so that there is a loop at the top and the ends are all at the same length. Take the top of the yarn stands and flip it over as shown in the picture, creating a loop with the yarn.
a loop created at the end of the yarn
  • Tighten the loop around the dowel rod toward the center. You can adjust later, and don't worry about the yarn being completely even at the bottom at this moment. Repeat, so that you have two strands of color A in the middle of your rod.
    Hand-tightening-a-loop-of-yarn-to-a-dowel-rod
  • Select color B, and then make four yarn strands to put on your dowel rod, two on either side of color A. Finish with color C – using three strands each on either side of color B. You will end up with 12 total lengths of yarn.
teal mustard and white yarn attached to a dowel rod
  • Clean up the yarn by trimming the ends. You could cut straight across, create a "v" shape; whatever you like. I chose to create a v-shape.
trimming a yarn art wall hanging
  • Drill into each end of the dowel rod for hanging (this is optional; you can also tie the yarn onto the ends).
hole drilled in the end of a dowel rod
  • Create a braid of the three colors of yarn about 24" long, then feed through the holes and knot for hanging. Display on a thumb tack or nail.

Video

Notes

This project was free as I had all the items on hand, however, you obviously might need to purchase supplies – but I advocate for using what you have.
I made 12 rows of yarn and my dowel rod is 21″ across, leaving room on either side. The size of the rod can be whatever you like. Maybe you want to make a huge statement pieces, or maybe you need something a little smaller to fill a particular spot on your wall.
If you have any branches available to use, that’s a great way to turn this into wall art with a more natural feel. The project works exactly the same but looks a little different on the wall. You could use beachy colors and a piece of driftwood, for example.
For length: keep in mind that you’re going to secure the yarn around the dowel, which will take a few inches off the finished length. My board was 21″ long, and the finished yarn wall hanging is about 19″ long at its longest point.
