If you love budget friendly decor, this is your project. Learn how to make this unique yarn wall hanging with a stick and some cute colors of yarn.

Skills Required: None. Even if you’ve never crafted before, you can make this wall hanging. You’ll be tying yarn and spray painting, and all that’s required is patience.

DIY yarn wall art

Our new place has a lot of bare walls begging for some attention. I like to mix things up and avoid putting something framed on each and every wall, so I came up with this DIY wall hanging idea for a change of pace.

I’m excited to share this yarn wall hanging with you because it’s SO easy. You’ll only need to cut a dowel rod down to size, cut yarn, and then drill holes in the ends to attach your hanger. Although I have an option for that if you don’t have a drill!

I love that this wall hanging goes with a variety of styles including boho, farmhouse, modern . . . it’s really about the choice of colors and how you put them together.

You can use items already in your home to help you pick yarn colors, but I also love using Design Seeds for color palettes.

Three skeins of yarn with a dowel rod wood board and scissors

Once you pick your colors, the rest of this wall hanging is simple. Ready to get started on this yarn craft? Here’s how it’s done.

Gather These Supplies

  • Dowel rod – 1 inch in diameter, cut down to 21″
  • Piece of wood or cardboard for wrapping yarn – mine was about 21″
  • Skeins of yarn – 3 in complementary colors
  • Scissors
  • Drill (optional)
  • Saw – to cut down your dowel rod

For wrapping the yarn: I used a board that was about 21″ inches in length that I had leftover from another project for wrapping. Stiff cardboard would also work.

DIY yarn wall art

The finished hanging really looks awesome on the wall. I can’t believe this didn’t take that long to make, and how good it looks! It would be fun to experiment with different colors and styles of yarn.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1 Dowel rod(s) or stick
  • 1 piece wood or cardboard, to use for wrapping
  • 3 skeins Yarn complementary colors
  • Sandpaper

Instructions

  • Select a dowel rod and cut down to size using a saw. Sand the ends to clean up.
  • Begin with the center color. Wrap the yarn around your wood or cardboard about 15 – 16 times. Trim the end.
    Wrapping-yarn-around-a-board-and-trimming-with-scissors
  • Once you are done wrapping and have trimmed the end from the skein, cut across the yarn. You'll basically have 15 – 16 pieces of yarn together that will be tied to your dowel.
    Trimming-the-yarn-on-the-board-with-scissors
  • Double the yarn (fold it in half) so that there is a loop at the top and the ends are all at the same length. Take the top of the yarn stands and flip it over as shown in the picture, creating a loop with the yarn.
a loop created at the end of the yarn
  • Tighten the loop around the dowel rod toward the center. You can adjust later, and don't worry about the yarn being completely even at the bottom at this moment. Repeat, so that you have two strands of color A in the middle of your rod.
    Hand-tightening-a-loop-of-yarn-to-a-dowel-rod
  • Select color B, and then make four yarn strands to put on your dowel rod, two on either side of color A. Finish with color C – using three strands each on either side of color B. You will end up with 12 total lengths of yarn.
teal mustard and white yarn attached to a dowel rod
  • Clean up the yarn by trimming the ends. You could cut straight across, create a "v" shape; whatever you like. I chose to create a v-shape.
trimming a yarn art wall hanging
  • Drill into each end of the dowel rod for hanging (this is optional; you can also tie the yarn onto the ends).
hole drilled in the end of a dowel rod
  • Create a braid of the three colors of yarn about 24" long, then feed through the holes and knot for hanging. Display on a thumb tack or nail.

Notes

This project was free as I had all the items on hand, however, you obviously might need to purchase supplies – but I advocate for using what you have.
I made 12 rows of yarn and my dowel rod is 21″ across, leaving room on either side. The size of the rod can be whatever you like. Maybe you want to make a huge statement pieces, or maybe you need something a little smaller to fill a particular spot on your wall.
If you have any branches available to use, that’s a great way to turn this into wall art with a more natural feel. The project works exactly the same but looks a little different on the wall. You could use beachy colors and a piece of driftwood, for example.
For length: keep in mind that you’re going to secure the yarn around the dowel, which will take a few inches off the finished length. My board was 21″ long, and the finished yarn wall hanging is about 19″ long at its longest point.

Create an adorable owl pom pom with yarn and a pom pom maker! This easy fall craft is perfect for all ages and offers endless creative possibilities.

Skills Required: Beginner. You’re going to use a pom pom maker which is relatively easy to do, but I suggest trying a plain pom pom first with scrap yarn. That way when you do the owl you’ll know what to expect from the tool.

How to make an owl pom pom

Fall is in the air, and we’re diving headfirst into cozy crafting with a project that’s as adorable as it is simple—meet our charming owl pom pom!

My kids and I have been having a blast with pom poms lately, but this little project has quickly become our top pick. With just a bit of yarn and a pom pom maker, you can whip up these cute critters in no time!

This craft is perfect for crafters of all ages, whether you’re a seasoned DIYer or just looking for a fun way to spend a crisp autumn afternoon.

These pom pom owl craft is incredibly versatile – make some friends and use them to add a touch of whimsy to your fall decor, or thread a string through them to create unique ornaments or thoughtful gifts.

The possibilities are endless, so let’s get started on this fun and easy fall craft!

Make a Pom Pom Owl

Gather These Supplies

  • Yarn (white and colored yarn, I used black, yellow, brown, and tan)
  • Pom Pom maker
  • Baker’s twine and needle for hanging (optional)
  • Hot glue gun (optional)
  • Scissors

Important Tip

It takes a little bit of “backwards” thinking to see how the yarn pieces end up looking like an owl. But after you make this one or two times, you’ll totally get it and can eventually make your own patterns.

You will only create this design on ONE side of the pom pom maker.

Make the First Eye

Step 1. Open the tool. Wrap the white yarn around the pom pom maker a few times on the left side of the U shape. Knot and tie off.

Step 2. Wrap the black yarn several times around the white yarn you just wrapped. This should be thicker than the white yarn. Knot and tie off.

Step 3. Wrap the yellow(ish) yarn around the black yarn several times, until it’s about as thick as shown. Don’t knot and tie off – just set aside. You are going to wrap this tan yarn around the second eye.

Make the Second Eye

Step 4. Repeat steps 1 and 2 on the right side of the U shape of the tool.

Fill in the Face

Step 5. Now you’ll pick up the yellow(ish) yarn and continue wrapping it from left to right, covering the other eye. Wrap back and forth a bit to thicken the pom pom.

visual illustration of creating the owl design with yarn on the pom pom maker

Create the Beak

Step 6. Wrap some brown yarn around the center of the U shape as shown. This is going to be not only the beak, but the hair coming out the top.

Fill in the Rest of the Head

Step 7. Use the tan yarn to fill in the remainder of the tool. Then close that U and open the other one.

Step 8. Wrap the entire second U shape with the tan yarn to finish.

Tie Off and Trim

You’ll want to follow the instructions on the package for your pom pom maker. usually you tie off the pom in the center off the tool, then cut along the grooves.

Open the tool and remove. It will NOT look like an owl until you use sharp scissors to trim the yarn down and clean up.

Pom pom removed from the pom pom maker tool

Continue trimming until you’re happy with the way it looks. I left the brown yarn on top a bit longer to resemble the eyebrow hair some owls have. I think it adds some personality to this little guy!

Finished owl pom pom

If you’re planning on turn this bird into an ornament, just thread a piece of bakers twine onto a large embroidery needle and insert through the middle (make sure to go through the center thread).Remove the needle, pull to the top, and tie off with a knot.

Baker's twine being threaded through the pom pom

You can also hot glue the twine into the yarn, but it’s not as clean of a look.

Pom pom owl Christmas ornament

I hope you enjoy making this cute owl with your kids. It takes a bit of practice to get everything symmetrical and straight. But with some experimenting and a lot of laughs, you’ll be making tons of little owl friends before you know it!

Wondering what yarn and needles or hook to use for what project? This is your complete guide for beginners, with a yarn weight chart!

Pile-of-rainbow-yarn-in-various-colors

Let’s talk about yarn weights! Yarn weight is a seemingly simple topic that can quickly become as tangled as a dropped stitch in a complicated knitting pattern.

It doesn’t matter if you’re just getting started with crochet and knitting or you’ve been doing it for years – everyone needs to understand the difference in weight structures of the different yarns available on the market.

What yarn should you (or can you) use for your project?

I’ve been knitting since I was 15 years old . . . that would be about 32 years as of this writing. My mother taught me how to cast on, and how to knit, and I taught myself the rest. And the rest is history!

Even with decades of experience, I find myself pausing, chart in hand, trying to recall whether I need a DK or a Worsted for that hat pattern I’ve been dying to try. I always have to refer to a chart.

As you might imagine, in the world of knitting and crochet, not all yarns are spun equally. The thickness of your yarn (or its weight) plays a crucial role in determining the outcome of your project. It affects everything from the feel of the fabric to the size of the needles or hook you’ll use, and yes, even the final size of your piece.

Pile-of-crochet-supplies-and-granny-squares

But this post is here to untangle the mysteries for you with a yarn weight chart! Consider it your go-to reference for all things yarn-related, especially when standing in the aisle of your local craft store, feeling overwhelmed by the options.

If you’re just getting started in this wonderful world of yarn-loving-creators, then you’re going to want to use this as a reference guide to help you with your purchases of various types of yarns for your different projects.

Most yarn you purchase will have a symbol on it like the below. You’ll use that to read the chart and figure out the type of yarn you have, as well as needles or hook to use and gauge.

Yarn-weight-labels

Guide to Yarn Weights

Once you get a better understanding of yarn weights, you’ll easily be able to swap out different types of yarns within a weight. For example, worsted weight yarn can be substituted out for cotton or linen. But first you need to understand gauge.

What is Gauge?

Gauge in crochet and knitting is all about measuring how many stitches and rows fit into a 1-inch square of your fabric. Think of it like this: when you’re making a piece of clothing or a blanket, you want it to come out the right size, right? Gauge helps you make sure that happens.

Here’s how it works: Patterns usually tell you the gauge, meaning they’ll say something like “18 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches.” This means that if you knit or crochet according to the pattern, 18 stitches across should measure 4 inches wide, and 24 rows should measure 4 inches tall.

To check your gauge, you make a little test piece called a swatch. After you finish it, you lay it flat and measure a 4-inch square in the middle. Count how many stitches and rows are inside that square. If you have more stitches or rows than the pattern calls for, your fabric is too tight, and you might need to use a larger hook or needle. If you have fewer, your fabric is too loose, and a smaller hook or needle might be the way to go.

Getting the gauge right is super important because it makes sure that the thing you’re making ends up being the size you expect. If the gauge is off, you might end up with a sweater that’s too big or too small, even if you followed the pattern exactly. So, taking a little time to check your gauge at the beginning can save you a lot of time and yarn in the long run.

Yarn Weight Chart

The chart is your shortcut! For knitting, the gauge column reflects the number of stockinette stitches every 4 inches. For crochet, it represents the number of single crochets per 4 inches.

Yarn weight chart with gauge

*This chart is a guideline only and reflects the most commonly used gauges and hook sizes for specific yarn categories.

** Lace weight yarns are usually knitted or crocheted on larger needles and hooks to create lacy, openwork patterns. Accordingly, a gauge range is difficult to determine. Always follow the gauge stated in your pattern.

Note: Steel crochet hooks are sized differently from regular hooks — the higher the number, the smaller the hook, which is the reverse of regular hook sizing.

Now, here’s a detailed description of each type of yarn and the weight, as well as a visual so you can see an example of what that yarn looks like in a skein.

Lace

Lace is a super fine, extra light weight yarn, and is primarily used in creating knitted lace patterns on shawls, and can also be used for socks.

lace weight yarn

Super Fine/Sock

Super fine yarn is primarily used for baby clothes, socks, shawls, and super awesome Fair Isle work. It’s also known as “baby” and “fingering” yarn because of how light weight and soft it is.

super fine sock yarn

Fine/Sport

Fine yarn is also known as baby weight yarn. This yarn is primarily used for baby items, socks, hats, mittens, and colorful Fair Isle work. It’s very closely related to super fine, but usually used with a slightly bigger needle.

Berrocco ultra wool fine yarn

Light/DK

Light/DK yarn is a classic weight yarn that is primarily used for children’s knit clothing. The light gauge is a perfect scale for creating projects oriented for children’s designs, plus Fair Isle, double knitting, and intarsia work. It’s amazing for crocheting because the project doesn’t become too bulky.

light worsted yarn

Medium/Worsted Weight

Medium yarn is mostly known as worsted weight yarn. It’s the #1 type of yarn that people create yarn projects with via knitting and crocheting. This is great for artistically created blankets, scarves, hats, gloves, sweaters, Christmas stockings, and so much more!

medium worsted weight yarn

Bulky

Bulky yarn runs about twice as thick as worsted weight yarn. The most amazing part about working with bulky weight yarn is that it can be worked up quickly on large needles. For those who want instant knitting gratification, this is yarn for you!

bulky yarn

Super Bulky

If you want to make a fun, fast, and chunky blanket or are trying to add some artistic flair to a simple sweater, then super bulky is your yarn! The gauging is 2 knit stitches in an inch!

super bulky yarn

Jumbo

Jumbo yarn is slightly thicker than the super bulky, and is another great and fun yarn to knit with to create projects fast. Especially if you want a lap blanket or a fun blanket for any time of the year! Also great for making pillow covers and anything else your imagination will unleash.
