Follow this simple DIY stamped skirt tutorial to give new life to some of your old clothes! Fabric stamping is so easy, and you’ll have a new look in minutes.

Skills Required: Beginner. I recommend having experience with paint and stamping before attempting this project. If you’ve never stamped before, practice a lot on paper or scrap fabric first.

Fabric stamping on a blue ankle length skirt

I was cleaning out my closet the other day, and I found a bunch of items I decided I wanted to revive. This blue skirt was one of them – it’s the perfect length, pretty color, and so comfortable.

BUT it was just a little boring for my taste, so I decided to stamp the fabric to make it more interesting.

This DIY Elephant Stamped Skirt was so easy to make (as usual), and is such a fun new/old addition to my closet! If you like tackling fashion crafts, this idea will be for you. You can apply it to a variety of surfaces!

Blue skirt, wood block fabric stamp, and fabric paint

Before we get started, I wanted to share a few tips for stamping on fabric that I learned during the process.

If your garment is new, prewash it to remove the sizing. Don’t use fabric softener.

Check the fabric paint bottle and make sure it’s appropriate for your fabric. I like to use cotton and cotton blends because I always have the best results. Things like rayon, tulle, lycra, and similar don’t work as well, but you really have to check the bottle.

Apply the ink or paint to the stamp, not the other way around. What I mean by that is you should leave the stamp face up on your work surface and either brayer on paint or dab an ink pad down on the stamp. This helps give you the most even distribution of paint/ink on your fabric.

Elephant designs stamped onto a blue skirt with white fabric paint

Practice fabric stamping on paper first before going right to the garment. You want to get used to the amount of pressure you’ll need to apply.

Don’t expect perfection. It’s okay if not every stamping looks the same or the image isn’t *completely* crisp and clear. You can seek perfection, but understand there’s a little variation that makes the project interesting! Embrace it.

Notes

Step 3: these stamps were specifically designed for stamping on fabric and I wanted my design to be a little thicker, so I dipped in the paint rather than rolled. But just for this project! The brayer tip still applies especially for regular scrapbooking and clear stamps.

Learn how to make a DIY t-shirt stamp in any design from the unlikeliest of surfaces! You’ll love this fun fashion project – and it’s so easy, the kids can help! Great craft for tweens and teens.

Skills Required: Beginner. Anyone can do this project, even with no prior crafting experience. If you’re a newbie crafter, start with a small, less complicated design on a fabric sample first.

DIY t-shirt stamp

Along with everyone else, we are obsessed with the pineapple craft trend right now. And after seeing this perfect pineapple tee on Pinterest, I decided to make a one of my own using a DIY t-shirt stamp! You’re going to love this fashion craft.

It took me awhile to figure out what I could use for my t-shirt stamp that would be a little unusual and/or interesting.

It finally occurred to me while I was getting Chinese takeout what I could do – use the box!

Using takeout boxes to create a large t-shirt stamp is the easiest and cheapest technique, and you could use it to make any design you want. This hand-stamped pineapple tee is so easy, the supplies are simple, and I love how it turned out!

Choosing a Design

In this project you’ll use a pencil to make the lines of the design. This means you can’t get quite as detailed with your design (and let’s face it, you can’t get too detailed in general with a takeout box).

If you want a bit more detail, use a sharper object with a smaller tip. Just be careful not to rip through the foam.

I think the challenge is to take your design to the maximum level of detail for what the item is – and still have it look good!

Isn’t this the cutest tee shirt for summer? And think of the possibilities! You can put a design like this on an apron, beach bag, kids’ white summer dress, tea towels or tablecloths . . . it has a fun organic look that works well.

  • Draw or trace your design on the foam using a pencil.
Draw your design with the pencil in the Styrofoam
  • Cut the outside edges of your stamp design. You'll want to go right up to the edge, because anywhere you place ink is going to be on your surface.
Cut out the stamp using yellow handled scissors
  • Apply paint to the foam. I found it's easiest to brush the paint on with a foam brush, or roll it on with a roller.
Applying craft paint to a t-shirt stamp
  • Press stamp on shirt (making sure to press on all areas), and remove.
press the stamp to the shirt
  • Let dry. Follow any additional instructions for your fabric paint to set.

Notes

Step 6: Instructions for my paint were . . . heat set the painted surface using a dry, hot iron and a pressing cloth. Lay pressing cloth over the stamped fabric and iron the stamped design for 30 seconds, lift the iron and move it to another section of the stamped design. Your iron should be set at the highest setting allowed for the decorated fabric, no steam.

Learn how to make a pompom for a hat and then attach it! Dress up your beanie this winter with this easy tutorial. Add stitch accents too.

Skills Required: Beginner. Even brand newbies can make pom poms. It helps if you have embroidery experience to make the design on the hat but it’s not required. If you can sew on a button, then you can make a pompom and add it to your beanie!

How to Make a Pompom for a Hat

I have been letting this pom pom beanie project roll around in my brain for the last couple of months, trying to decide how to execute it well. Then, over the weekend, I found the right beanie and the right yarn and finally decided to make it happen and I’m SO glad I did.

I have noticed these solid beanies at Walmart (for just $2) and knew there had to be a way to take these inexpensive but plain little cuties to the next level, so I decided to add some neon yarn touches and BAM! I made these with a pom pom maker just like I did my pom pom wreath and wall hanging. It’s easy.

And once you’re finished, the cutest beanie around will have been created. This fashion craft is great because it is so cheap and, if you can sew on a button, you make yourself one!

Plain tan beanie with pink yarn on a needle

Gather These Supplies

  • Plain beanie
  • Yarn (if you are doing hearts then a thicker yarn will make a bigger impact)
  • Needle (make sure it is big enough to thread your yarn through!)
  • Scissors
  • Pom pom maker (optional)

Thoughts On This Project:

  • There isn’t much of a secret to stitching the Vs. I did mine all free-hand so they aren’t exactly evenly spaced, but you could also measure and mark them before with a fabric pencil if you want more exact placement.
  • After all of the loops are cut I like to spend some time adjusting and trimming the ends of the pom pom until I am happy with its shape.
  • Tie double knots when you tie off the yarn on the inside of the hat. That includes with the pom pom top as well. And make sure the needle goes through the center of the pom pom a few times to secure it.
  • A pom pom maker REALLY make this project easy. And then you can make pom poms for everything in your life once you get one. Just a suggestion!

You’ve done it! This pom pom beanie is SO easy, right? Now you can brave that cold January air in style. Or, just stay inside where it’s warm and there is Netflix and look cozy and cute. That’s my preferred option.

  • Cut a piece of yarn several inches long. Tie around the center of the looped very tightly. Then, take scissors and cut through the loops.

  • Thread your needle again and attach the pom pom to the top of the hat by threading it through the pom pom and tying it off inside the hat. Use several loops to secure.

  • You can also make a double chain. Cut two pieces of chain, one longer than the other, to make a chain that hangs at different lengths.
Chain with the clips at the ends
  • Place a good amount of jewelry glue onto the clip and attach to your mini. Do the same with the other side. If you need to, add a piece of felt to the back of the mini to make a larger gluing area.

  • Prop up your clips if you need to keep them level while the glue dries on little bits of wood or folded paper, etc. Let dry completely before wearing.

Instead of the minis, you can also use small wood circles or beads, broken jewelry, or a number of items around the home. This doesn’t necessarily have to be an expensive project!
