Learn how to make Thanksgiving gnomes to accent your holiday decor! These are such an easy autumn project – great for kids or adults.

Skills Required: Beginner. Even if you’ve never crafted before, you can easily make a gnome using a paper cone. You’ll be doing some cutting (using templates), painting, and attaching things using adhesive.

gnome happy Thanksgiving

Poor Thanksgiving. Sandwiched in-between Halloween and Christmas, it hardly ever gets the attention it deserves.

And this year? I’ve noticed that people are bringing out their Christmas decor earlier than ever! No judgements here, but I just don’t think I’m ready to give up my fall decorations. After all . . . I do love me some brown and orange.

What I’m saying is I want to keep the harvest mood going just a bit longer.

I made some fall gnomes, and I love them, but I wanted to make some gnomes specifically for Thanksgiving, so that’s what I’m showing you here today.

Make a Thanksgiving gnome

These cuties transition from the standard white beard to the brown, and I picked herringbone fabrics for the hats that remind me of November. I’m not sure how fabric can remind me of November, but can you disagree with me?

These stay out on my mantel or side table until the Christmas gnomes come out to play for the year. If you’ve never made them before . . you’re going to be shocked at how easy they are! No, really.

Cones to Use

The paper mache cones for my base can be found here. They are 10.63 x 4″. The template I made works for this size cone, but I’m sure you can alter it easily for other sizes.

I prefer the look of the paper mache, but you can also use foam cones. To be honest, they are a little bit cheaper and more readily available. I’m just a paper mache girl for whatever reason (and you can stack them).

Gather These Supplies

Make as many gnome as you like! Pick fun fabrics, and even add fun embellishments if you like. If you want to add a leaf or turkey leg embellishment on the hat anywhere, you can. Here’s how mine turned out.

Instructions

  • Print out the template and assemble using tape. Cut out.
Paper template and a hand holding a paper cone
  • Cut 1 3/4" off of the bottom of the template. Test fit and then set aside for the moment.
Wrapping the trimmed paper template around the paper mache cone
  • Choose your skin tone paint color. Paint the bottom of the cone with the skin tone. Paint the wood bead nose that color too.
Painting a paper mache cone with light skin tone craft paint
  • Cut the fabric of the hat out using the template.
Trimming out herringbone fabric using a cutting wheel
  • Tape off the bottom of the cone with painter's tape so you don't get adhesive on the skin of the gnome.
Hand wrapping painter's tape around the base of a paper mache cone
  • Apply spray adhesive to the top portion. Wrap the fabric around, smooth, and let dry.
Applying herringbone fabric to the cone using spray adhesive
  • Cut the faux fur for beards using the template. Trace on the back and then keep the faux fur forward while cutting so you don't trim off all the hair.
Piece of faux fur beard cut out
  • Attach a beard piece to the base of the cone using a hot glue gun.
Gluing a brown beard to a Thanksgiving gnome
  • Sand a flat spot on the wood bead using sandpaper. Hot glue the nose in the center where the beard meets the fabric to finish.
Gluing the wood nose to the front of the gnome

Notes

My cone printout was printed on poster setting, full size – it should take four pieces of paper.
Tip: The large scrap piece that you cut off the bottom at the widest part of the curve? You’re going to use it to draw a line about 1 3/4″ from the bottom of your template! Turns out the cut scrap makes a perfect curved line for you to trace.
Trimming the base of the template using the excess paper

I hope you enjoyed these gnomies! If you love them, let me know in the comments. We have St. Patrick’s Day gnomes and Valentine’s Day gnomes you might like as well.

I’d also love for you to check out the following posts. Happy Thanksgiving y’all!

Over 40 Kids Thanksgiving Crafts

Thanksgiving is a holiday brimming with warmth and family traditions, yet often, it seems to play second fiddle to its flashier neighbors: Halloween and Christmas.

Growing up, my Thanksgiving celebrations were more about the feast and less about crafting. But now, I see this cozy holiday as a hidden gem for sparking creativity in kids.

Let’s face it, there’s a certain magic in watching little hands turn simple materials into something special. And what better occasion than Thanksgiving to channel that energy into crafting?

Whether it’s transforming a cereal box into a proud turkey or smudging paint for a handprint autumn tree, these crafts create more than just art—they make memories.

In this post, I’m excited to share a cornucopia (see what I did there?) of over 40 Thanksgiving crafts for kids. This collection features everything from playful pumpkin pies to vibrant turkeys, and even whimsical Indian corn projects.

It’s a treasure trove of ideas that cater to all ages and skill levels. Whether you have a curious toddler, a crafty preschooler, or an imaginative elementary-aged child, there’s something here to spark their interest.

It’s also a chance for you and your kids to pause amidst the holiday hustle and immerse yourselves in the joy of creating something together.

So, grab your glue sticks, scissors, and a sprinkle of imagination. Dive into this festive list and let the Thanksgiving crafting begin.

Share your experiences in the comments! Let’s give Thanksgiving the spotlight it deserves and create some unforgettable crafty moments along the way.

paper bag turkey craft

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and it’s time to talk turkey – paper bag turkey, that is! Now, before you start rummaging through your fridge, let me clarify: we’re not about to cook up a feast.

Instead, we’re diving into a fun and easy Thanksgiving kids’ craft that’s so enjoyable, they might just forget about the pumpkin pie (for a moment, at least).

This turkey craft doesn’t involve hours of prep or a post-craft cleanup that resembles a scene from a disaster movie.

That’s right, we’re keeping things simple, mess-free, and hilariously entertaining with our paper bag turkey project.

It’s perfect for preschoolers, but let’s be honest, even the ‘big kids’ (yes, I’m looking at you, adults) will find themselves charmed by this feathery creation.

paper sack turkey craft

All you need is a regular paper lunch bag and a few sheets of craft foam in an array of Thanksgiving-worthy colors, some scissors, and glue.

And don’t worry, there’s a nifty printable template to guide you, so your turkey doesn’t end up looking like a peacock or, heaven forbid, a flamingo.

This craft is more than just a creative distraction; it’s bonding time with your kids and a way to get into the Thanksgiving spirit without the pressure of perfect pie crusts or spotless table settings.

Imagine your little ones’ faces light up as they bring their paper bag turkeys to life, complete with vibrant feathers and adorable expressions. It’s the kind of memory that makes the holiday season so special.

So, grab your supplies, gather the kiddos, and let’s get crafting! This turkey is a great way to keep the little ones entertained and proud of their holiday artistic achievements.

Get ready to gobble up some crafty fun! This is one turkey that promises not to gobble back. 😀

Gather These Supplies

Tips and Thoughts for This Project

I buy most of the supplies for this craft at the dollar store. Especially the paper bags! You can get a huge pack of them and make paper bag crafts.

If you’ve never used craft foam, the reason I chose it is to keep the feathers rigid. Construction paper or cardstock would also work, but it’s not stiff like craft foam.

Kids love using these as puppets! You can also attach them to string and hang them up.

If you are ready to try this idea, here is the printable how to below:
