Use spray paint to revive and upcycle old Christmas tins! Add cork tags and adhesive letters to use them for gift containers or storage. It is so easy to recycle old cookie tins, you’ll be begging for edible gifts this holiday season. I’m sure of it!

Skills Required: Beginner. These are a relatively easy craft even if you have little crafting experience. You’ll be spray painting, and I recommend patience for that. Use several light coats and let dry between coats.

Recycled Christmas Cookie Tins

Who doesn’t love Christmas cookies? I love them a lot, and I think people know that – because they love to give them to me in cute little Christmas cookie tins! And of course I will gladly accept (it would be rude not to!).

When the holiday season is over and the cookies are long gone, I’m left with containers that I’m not quite sure what to do with. Well, wasn’t quite sure what to do with until now.

I decided to upcycle my Christmas tins into two things: 1) cute storage and 2) new gift holders! I plan on using these to hold items in my craft studio and also to hand out baked goods to the neighbors.

Gold spray painted cookie tin with a cork tag that says "Jane"

You aren’t going to believe how easy this budget friendly Christmas craft is to do. You just need a few items and you may already have them in your craft stash!

Fill the insides with goodies like candies and cookies if you are going to gift.

And as I said, you can use these as storage too. Because who doesn’t need more storage?

christmas felt ball garland

I’m kind of excited to share this Christmas decor project. It was such a FUN and easy one to put together that I can’t wait to show you!

I love using felt in my Christmas crafts and decorating. I think I’ve proven myself in that regard with felt ornaments, a felt wreath on wood, and felt mistletoe. I even used some old scraps of felt to make the hats for these gnome ornaments!

Once I get obsessed with a craft material, it’s done. I’m going to make anything and everything I can with it! And I’m all about felt and plain wood this year.

I’ve made a basic felt ball garland, and one for winter too. The process is so easy that I decided to repeat it in Christmas colors! And I added some polka dot balls and felt candy canes too.

This garland can be hung around a doorway, on a mantel (that’s how I display mine) or (of course) on the Christmas tree. It’s lightweight and easy to hang up with pins or Command strips. So basically? It can go anywhere!

Finished garland longer than pictured here

For this decor, you will need felt balls (I used 48 1″ balls), a skein of embroidery floss, and a thick needle. Embroidery floss comes in skeins that are 8.7 yards long, or 26.1 feet.

These are the supplies you’ll need for one garland, and you can obviously tie two garlands together if you like.

Making Felt Balls

Since I wanted a wide array of different felt colors, I found it more practical to buy my felt balls already made.

However, you can definitely make your own felt balls using roving, felt sheets, or yarn scraps. It’s more time consuming but it’s fun, especially when you can put the kids to work doing it! 😀

How to Make Felt Balls Using Roving

If you want to make your own felt balls, the process is called “wet felting.” You’ll need to purchase wool roving. Besides the wool, you’ll need hot water and dish soap.

The basic process is to dip pieces of wool roving into warm, sudsy water and then shape into balls. Then you’ll let them dry overnight (you can get more details here on the process).

Using Felt Sheets or Yarn Scraps

You can also make your balls using felt sheets (or scraps of felt sheets), or yarn scraps. The process is very similar to using the roving, but you’re going to have to work the material a little more. You’ll still want to use wool felt or wool yarn.

How Many Balls?

How many wool balls will you get out of a 1/2 oz. package of wool roving? Approximately 12 – 16 at about a 1/2″ diameter. It varies greatly depending on how tightly you squeeze the balls, etc.

You can drape your garland over just about anything. I highly recommend doing it the way I’ve shown in the pictures below. If you don’t have anything to hang the garland on, just use thin pins or small nails to hang on the mantel.

felt ball garland for christmas tree

Swag every three to five feet for a little interest. You never want to hang it straight. The swag (tacking it up at various points) will integrate into your decor better. Trust me!

Christmas Felt Ball Garland

Don’t buy a felt ball garland for your Christmas tree or mantel when they are SO easy to make! Use felt balls and embroidery floss and you'll have one in minutes.

Instructions

  • Arrange your felt balls in the order you will string them. You can string out the colors any way you like; I spaced them approximately 1" apart.
Felt balls, felt candy canes, embroidery floss, and scissors
  • Open the embroidery floss. The floss should be about 8 – 9 yards long, and you'll cut in half.
Hand holding a length of embroidery floss
  • Tie a knot at one end, leaving a 9" tail or so. String a needle onto the other end of the floss.
Hand holding a needle strung onto embroidery floss
  • String a felt ball onto the floss using the tapestry needle. Push the needle through the center of the ball and to the knot.
Pushing a needle through a green felt ball
  • Continue stringing felt balls onto the floss, doing several at a time. Every so often, add a polka dot ball or a felt candy cane piece.
Felt balls and a felt candy cane strung onto embroidery floss
  • Once you have several balls on the garland, space them out about 1" apart. Continue stringing balls onto the garland until you get it to the length you want (mine is 8 feet long).
Spreading out the felt balls along the floss
  • Once you get to the last ball, tie off the end in a knot and trim with the scissors. Your garland is ready to hang.
Tying off the knot at the end of the garland

Notes

I used 48 felt balls, .78″ width. Also note that estimated completion times above are for pre-made balls.
If you want to put felt candy canes and polka dot balls throughout your garland, just do it every 6 – 8 balls. The polka dot balls and the candy cane felt pieces are more expensive than the solid color ones, so the garland will get really expensive if you use too many.

Create easy DIY Christmas magnets with wood slices! This simple and festive craft is perfect for holiday decor or handmade gifts.

DIY Christmas magnets

While wandering the aisles at Michaels recently, I stumbled upon the cutest unfinished wood disks in various sizes.

They immediately caught my eye because I love working with wood—it’s so versatile and has a natural charm that works beautifully with paint and Mod Podge.

(Fun fact: my appreciation for wood might stem from my undergraduate forestry degree that I never used, but who’s to say?)

These tiny wood slices practically begged to be turned into something festive. Their petite size made them perfect for a quick and fun Christmas craft. That’s when inspiration struck: DIY Christmas magnets!

Not only are they easy to make, but they’re also a delightful way to add a touch of holiday cheer to your decor or gift wrapping.

The beauty of these wood slices is their versatility. Whether you love to paint or prefer decoupage, the possibilities are endless. For this project, I combined acrylic paint and adhesive stencils to create crisp, festive designs on the front.

Once painted, I attached magnets to the back, and voila—adorable Christmas magnets were born!

These homemade magnets are fantastic for holiday decor, stocking stuffers, or thoughtful handmade gifts. Plus, they’re beginner-friendly and can be customized in so many ways.

If you’re looking for a creative project to get into the holiday spirit, these wood slice magnets are it. Let me show you how to make them!

Gather These Supplies

  • Unfinished wood disks – they come in a pack of four
  • Acrylic paint – colors of your choice (red, green, white, etc)
  • Adhesive stencils – Christmas themed
  • Foam spouncers
  • Magnets
  • Hot glue gun and hot glue

Do you need to seal the wood slices? Not necessarily. They will be just fine as is, although if you want to seal them with Mod Podge or something like Dimensional Magic, you can.

I hope you love making these! They are on my fridge right now. Happy Holidays! Get the printable how to card below:

Learn how to make DIY magnets with a holiday theme using wood slices! This is easy and inexpensive.
Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 1 hour
Dry Time 1 hour
Total Time 2 hours 5 minutes
Servings 4 magnets
Cost $5

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 4 Wood slices
  • Multisurface craft paint
  • Magnets

Instructions

  • Smooth your adhesive stencils down on your wood discs. Make sure they are really smooth, so no paint creeps out from under the stencils – make sure you use the smoothest side of the wood discs.
Adhesive stencils attached to wood slices
  • Use your spouncers to paint the stencils. The key to getting clean lines is to use a little bit of paint at a time and keep going over and over the area, gently.
using a spouncer to add red paint to an adhesive stencil
  • Once your slices are dry, turn the wood discs over and hot glue a few magnets to the back. I'd do two so that they don't spin around.

Notes

If you are wondering how I did two colors, I did a portion of the stencil in one color, peeled off the stencil and let the paint dry. Then I came back and did the other color later.

  • 3 pieces Felt sheet(s) 1 piece each of green, red, and white
  • Blank hair clip

Instructions

  • Cut the strips of felt according to the sizes in the Notes.
Pieces of felt on a cutting mat with pinking shears and a hot glue gun
  • Put the two white strips of felt on top of the colored strip and glue all of the layers together at one end.

  • Start to roll the felt toward the colored strip, so it ends up on the inside. Separate each layer, securing with little bits of hot glue as you go.

  • Keep rolling and gluing until the roll is about 1 inch across. The strips will be uneven at the end, and that's fine.

  • Cut off the excess, keeping the outermost white strip slightly longer than the other two strips. Give all three of the strips some final glue at the end. Keeping the outermost white strip a little longer makes it look more tapered instead of just stopping the swirl abruptly.
Peppermint shape created out of white and green felt
  • Use pinking shears to cut both short ends of the rectangle. If you don't have pinking shears, make some small zig-zag cuts with scissors.
Felt rectangle with both ends cut using pinking shears
  • Pinch the rectangle in the middle to make a bow shape and hot glue it together.
Rectangular piece of felt hot glued in the center
  • Hot glue the bow to the top of your clip. You can line the clip with some felt first, but I decided not to since it would be completely covered by the bow. Just be careful you don't glue the clip shut!

  • Glue the swirl to the top of the bow to finish. Let cool completely before wearing.
