Get a tutorial for a simple DIY chair cushion with ties – yes, it’s so easy, anyone can do it with basic sewing skills! Pick your favorite fabric for a custom addition to your decor.

Skills Required: Beginner. There are several steps to this project, but the sewing is simple. Even if you’re a beginning sewist, you should be able to accomplish this with some patience.

diy chair cushions

Hi everyone! This is Ashlee from My So Called Crafty Life, and I’m here to show you all how to make a simple DIY chair cushion! My Mama Marcie has a knack for antiques.

Her house is filled with them, and she always finds the most beautiful furniture pieces. One of my favorite piece she has in her kitchen is a gorgeous green iron chair with a floral fabric covered DIY chair cushion.

The chair is precious, but the seat is flat as a pancake and very uncomfortable.

sew a chair cushion

A really easy solution for an uncomfy chair, without reupholstering it and adding lots of padding, is to make something comfy that ties onto the chair.

So, I decided to whip one up for Marcie’s kitchen chair, and now it makes a great resting spot without hurting your tush!

I think this turned out to be just adorable! I have a thing for vintage westerns, and these cowgirls make me swoon! The fabric is an old print from Alexander Henry that I picked up at antique fair.

The best part is that this home decor is easy to make, requiring no pattern, and you can easily whip one up in an hour or two. Here’s how I made this . . .

Ingredients

  • Fabric for Cushion about a half yard will do for most small to medium size chairs
  • Fabric Scraps or Ribbon/Trim for Ties
  • Fabric Scraps for Buttons
  • Fiber Fill

Instructions

  • Measure the chair seat. Add two inches to both the length and width – one inch (for a half-inch seam allowance on each side) plus one inch for the puff factor.
Piece of fabric laying on a table with a pair of scissors
  • Once you decide on the size, cut two pieces, one front and one back. Stack the pieces together and fold in half. Cut the bottom edge to be rounded.
Rounding the bottom edge of a piece of fabric with a pair of scissors
  • Cut two ties to be 20"x 2".
Two strips of polka dot fabric on top of the cushion fabric
  • If you are using ribbon or trim, skip this step. To make the ties, start by folding your tie in half lengthwise right sides together and press. Stitch all the way along the side and across the top.
Folding polka dot fabric in half lengthwise
  • Turn the tie right side out. Fold a little of the open in to the inside and stitch across the end, closing up the open end.
Pushing a dowel rod into a fabric tube
  • Cut tie in half. Repeat with other tie.
Cutting a tie in half with a pair of scissors
  • Pin your ties in between the front and back piece. The front and back should be right sides together. Pin the ties about an inch and a half in from the sides.
Make sure the ties are facing in towards the center of the cushion and the raw edges are lined up at the back. You need two ties on the right side and two at the left on what will be your back seam. Pin it all together.
Fabric ties pinned to the front and back of the cushion fabric
  • Stitch across the back then pivot and stitch down the side, across the bottom, up the other side and then across the back until right past the left set of ties. You should have an opening left in the back between the ties for stuffing.

  • Clip corners and curves close to the seam.

  • To make covered buttons, cut a piece of fabric with the template included in your kit. Then follow the instructions for your kit to assemble the button(s).

Notes

Step 1: My seat was 15 x 17″, so I wanted my fabric to be 17 x 19″.
Step 15: Instructions for my kit were to place the fabric right side down into the rubber cup. insert the top of the button face down into the cup. Gather the fabric into the back side of the button front.
Place the button back shank side up onto the gathered fabric in the back side of the button front. Press the back of the button into the cup with the little plastic piece that the kit includes. You should feel it snap together. Remove button from the cup. Repeat with your other buttons. I made four.

I can’t wait to hear if you give this a try! Let me know in the comments. And if you enjoy sewing, here are some additional ideas we think you’re going to love:

Learn how to make a unique DIY house number from a wood slice – this is such a great home decor project, and on a budget!

Skills Required: Beginner. You don’t need any crafting or DIY skills to make this simple craft. It’s a perfect beginner project.

DIY House Number Sign: Rustic Wood Slice Edition

We have a family friend who owns a tree cutting business. Last year he asked if I would like some real wood slices for any projects. I said yes, and then headed over to his house before he gave them away!

There are so many things you can do with wood slices, and Amy has several projects. Check out her wood burned plaque, tree branch coasters, and farmhouse Thanksgiving sign.

At my house, these wood slices have been centerpieces, table decor and studio signs. Our condo really needed a house number sign, so guess what came in handy? I’m excited to show you what I did.

You can create this DIY house number plaque on a budget and with ease. It looks great displayed with different flowers of the season hanging in the mason jar. It’s perfect for your rustic or farmhouse themed decor!

Wood slice with screws, a hose clamp, and a screwdriver

Gather These Supplies

  • Wood slice
  • Mason jar
  • Hose clamp
  • Screwdriver
  • Small piece of wood
  • Sandpaper
  • Vinyl numbers
  • Picture hook and nails
  • Burlap
  • Flowers

You’ll also want burlap and faux flowers. Or you can put water in the jar and use real flowers. Mason jars make great vases!

If you have paint, you can draw some freehand numbers on the plaque with a pencil and then paint them in so you don’t to buy the vinyl letters. We just happened to have them on hand.

This DIY gold frame is such an eye catching project! Use spray paint to make it look like 14k gold. Very easy and very budget friendly!

Skills Required: Beginner. It helps if you have experience with spray paint since that’s what this project is. Just remember: several light coats as opposed to a few heavy.

This DIY Gold Frame is 14-Karat Decor!

Today I have a fun, simple, but eye-catching project to share with you! I was inspired by the most gorgeous frame I saw on Instagram last week.

I knew I could make this easy home decor in a few simple steps with just a few supplies. This project is the result. I hope you enjoy the tutorial for this DIY picture frame!

Wood frame, laserjet wood frame overlay, gold spray paint, and a hot glue gun

You might be wondering why there is an overlay as well as a wood frame in this project. Well, you can just use a simple frame alone . . . but I wanted to make this gold frame look not just metallic, but a little more ornate.

The overlay adds that special touch I was looking for. You can make it a different color if you like, but I chose to just paint the entire thing gold. Here’s how I did it.

Gather These Supplies

  • Wooden frame
  • Wooden laser cut frame
  • Gold spray paint
  • Glue gun and glue sticks (craft glue also works)

I highly recommend Rustoleum spray paint based on my experience. The Rustoleum Bright Gold is a really nice shade, and the paint has a nice smooth finish. I’m pleased with the final results!

Create a stylish DIY door stop with felt, string, and a brick. Step-by-step instructions for a functional and fun project!

homemade door stop

A DIY door stopper might not be the first project that comes to mind when you’re planning your next crafting adventure, but trust me, it’s a fun and functional way to add a little personality to your home.

Whether you’re dealing with kids that keep slamming your door shut or just want to keep a door propped open for convenience, this project combines practicality with creativity.

With just a few basic materials like felt, string, and a glue gun, you can transform a brick (any brick, really) into a decorative home decor item that’s both useful and chic. The best part? You can completely customize the look to match your personal style.

diy door stop

Add tassels for a playful touch, use vibrant colors for a pop of fun, or go for neutral tones if you prefer a minimalist vibe.

If your door isn’t too heavy, you can even swap out the brick for alternative weights like uncooked beans or rice, making it an even more versatile project.

This DIY door stopper is also a great way to use up leftover crafting supplies. Got some spare felt or a rug pad lying around? Perfect! You’ll not only be creating something useful but also giving your scraps a new life.

And while I’ve included steps to make this a no-sew project, if you’re handy with a sewing machine, feel free to stitch your way to door-stopping glory. Here’s what you’re going to need:

Gather These Supplies

  • Brick
  • Felt sheets
  • Twine
  • Hot glue gun or sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Sheet of paper

DIY Door Stopper

Learn how to make a chic door stop with a brick, felt, and tassels! Easy, creative steps for a practical and decorative home accessory.
Course DIY Projects
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 1 hour
Total Time 1 hour 10 minutes
Servings 1 door stop
Cost $5

Ingredients

  • Brick small, square
  • 1 piece Rug pad or rubberized shelving liner
  • Felt sheet(s) enough to cover your brick, plus extra
  • 1 roll Twine white

Instructions

  • Tie the brick using the twine. For the twine at the top that will support the weight, combine several strands for added strength.
    Tying brick with string
  • Create a sleeve for the brick by gluing or sewing two pieces of felt together.
Gluing together two pieces of felt
  • Slide your brick into the felt sleeve. I added some paper on the bottom to avoid snags. Once the brick was down towards the bottom of the sleeve, I removed the paper.
Sliding the brick into a felt sleeve
  • Close the bottom end of the felt sleeve with hot glue, trimming as necessary. Let cool and hot glue rug pad to the bottom.
Gluing the bottom of the stop and applying the rug pad
  • At the top end, make two holes and run the twine through for a hanger. Trim the excess felt then hot glue the top in the shape of a milk carton.
Folding down the top of the felt pouch
  • Knot all the ends of the twine to make the loop, including those supporting the brick.
Knotting the end of the strings at the top of the door stop
  • Add mini tassels to the front if you like.
    make a door stopper

Video

Notes

The reason for the twine is both to hang and to help support the brick at the top – if just the felt is supporting the brick, it will eventually rip.
